Trinamool Congress Faces Deepening Split as Ritabrata Banerjee Faction Removes Mamata Banerjee, Suspends Abhishek

Kolkata: The political crisis within the All India Trinamool Congress has intensified, with the faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee announcing a new party committee and claiming to be the “real Trinamool Congress.”
In a dramatic move, the Ritabrata-led camp declared the removal of Mamata Banerjee from the party leadership and announced the suspension of Abhishek Banerjee. The faction has also unveiled a new organizational structure, asserting that it represents the original ideals and constitution of the party.
The latest development further deepens the fragmentation of the Trinamool Congress, which now appears divided into three distinct camps.
The first is the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress, which continues to retain a substantial section of the party’s traditional organization and cadre base.
The second is Ritabrata Banerjee’s faction, which describes itself as the “real TMC” and currently functions as the principal opposition grouping in the West Bengal Assembly.
The third bloc consists of approximately two dozen Trinamool Congress Members of Parliament who have reportedly merged with the National Citizens Party, a relatively lesser-known political outfit. This group is now extending support to the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Parliament.
Political observers believe the split could significantly reshape West Bengal’s political landscape, ending the long-standing dominance of a unified Trinamool Congress and creating a new phase of competition among former party colleagues.
The developments are expected to trigger legal and organizational battles over the party’s name, symbol, assets and official recognition. The issue may eventually require adjudication by the Election Commission of India if competing factions seek recognition as the legitimate successor to the Trinamool Congress.
With multiple factions now claiming the party’s legacy, West Bengal politics appears headed toward a period of unprecedented realignment and uncertainty.
