A tense situation unfolded along the Himachal Pradesh–Uttarakhand border after a large group of Nihang Sikhs breached police barricades while attempting to proceed towards Hemkund Sahib, prompting a massive security deployment and hours of negotiations between the administration and Sikh community leaders. The standoff, which lasted several hours, ended peacefully after authorities persuaded the group to return to Himachal Pradesh.
The incident occurred at the Kulhal border check post, where hundreds of Nihang Sikhs travelling from Paonta Sahib were stopped by Uttarakhand Police. The devotees had planned to march towards Hemkund Sahib, one of Sikhism’s holiest pilgrimage sites. However, the Uttarakhand administration denied them entry, citing concerns over maintaining law and order amid heightened tensions in parts of the state.
As police attempted to prevent the procession from entering Uttarakhand, several members of the group pushed past the barricades, leading to a brief confrontation with security personnel. Videos circulating on social media showed Nihang Sikhs removing barricades and advancing towards the state border, while police personnel tried to contain the situation. Despite the tense atmosphere, officials confirmed that no serious injuries or major violence were reported during the standoff.
The march followed recent unrest in Rudraprayag district, where four Nihang Sikhs were arrested after an altercation in Karnaprayag. Their arrest had triggered protests by members of the Sikh community, who gathered at a gurdwara in Nagrasu demanding their release. The administration feared that allowing another large procession into the state could further inflame the situation.
Senior police officers, district officials and Sikh religious leaders engaged in multiple rounds of discussions through the night to defuse tensions. After prolonged negotiations, the Nihang Sikhs agreed to return to Paonta Sahib under police escort, bringing the situation under control.
Following the resolution, authorities maintained a heavy security presence along the border and appealed to all parties to maintain peace. The Uttarakhand government reiterated that restrictions were imposed solely to ensure public safety and prevent any escalation of recent tensions. Officials added that the investigation into the earlier incidents in Rudraprayag is continuing, while security agencies remain on alert to ensure the smooth conduct of the Hemkund Sahib pilgrimage season.
