Australia qualified for the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after battling to a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Paraguay in their final Group D match. The result was enough for the Socceroos to finish second in the group and book their place in the knockout stage, marking another significant achievement for Australian football on the world stage.
Heading into the match, Australia needed only a draw to progress, while Paraguay required a victory to guarantee automatic qualification. Aware of the stakes, the Socceroos produced a disciplined and organised performance, frustrating Paraguay with a resolute defensive display and limiting their opponents to few clear scoring opportunities.
Australia also created chances of their own but were unable to find the breakthrough despite enjoying spells of possession. Goalkeeper Patrick Beach delivered a composed performance between the posts, making crucial saves when called upon, while defenders Harry Souttar and Jordy Bos anchored a solid backline that successfully kept Paraguay at bay throughout the contest.
Coach Tony Popovic made several changes to his starting XI, placing trust in a youthful squad that responded with maturity and determination. The tactical approach paid off as Australia earned the point they needed to advance from the group stage for only the third time in the nation’s World Cup history. The draw saw Australia finish with four points from three matches, enough to claim second place in Group D behind the group winners. The Socceroos will now face the runners-up from Group G in the Round of 32, with their opponents to be determined after the remaining group-stage fixtures.
For Paraguay, the goalless draw ended hopes of securing direct qualification. However, the South American side remains in contention to progress as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams under the expanded 48-team World Cup format. Speaking after the match, Popovic praised his players for their discipline and resilience under pressure. He described reaching the knockout stage as a reward for the team’s collective effort and said Australia would now shift its focus to preparing for the challenges that lie ahead in the Round of 32.
