With the rising burden of blood disorders and haematological malignancies across India, including Eastern India, the demand for advanced transplant care continues to grow. India reports over 1 lakh new blood cancer cases annually, with Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) emerging as a vital treatment option for conditions such as leukaemia, lymphoma, aplastic anaemia, multiple myeloma and thalassemia. Advances in transplant techniques, donor matching and supportive care have significantly improved outcomes. In this direction, Manipal Hospital EM Bypass continues to strengthen access to specialised BMT care through early diagnosis, advanced treatment and comprehensive patient support, a spirit reflected in the inspiring journeys shared by survivors at the event. Priyadarshini Sarkar, an Acute Myeloid Leukemia survivor, presented her journey through a PPT, while Jayanti Paul Saha, a Multiple Myeloma survivor post Autologous Transplant, performed a dance. Ritu Kundu and Sanchita Paul, both Thalassemia survivors, shared recitations, celebrating resilience, hope and the strength to overcome medical challenges.
During the programme, Sayan Ghosh, a 22-year-old Political Science (Honours) student from Malda and an aplastic anaemia (a condition where the bone marrow stops producing enough blood cells, leading to low levels of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, and can become life-threatening if left untreated, survivor, shared his inspiring journey of overcoming the rare blood disorder) survivor shared his journey and stated, “My journey began when a routine blood test before a dental procedure revealed that my blood counts were very low. After further tests, I was diagnosed with aplastic anaemia, which was a difficult phase for me and my family. In December, when we received the diagnosis, we were worried about the future. After consulting Dr. Rajib Deat Manipal Hospital EM Bypass, I was advised to undergo a Bone Marrow Transplant Fortunately, my elder brother was found to be a 100% HLA-matched donor, and I successfully. underwent the Bone Marrow Transplant on 11th March at Manipal Hospital EM Bypass. The journey was challenging, but the support of my family, especially my brother, and the care provided by the doctors and hospital team gave me the strength to keep going. Today, I am recovering well and slowly returning to my normal life I am grateful for this new beginning and the hope I have received through this joumey.”

Prof. (Dr.) Utpal Chaudhuri, one of the pioneers of Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) in Eastern India, shared, ‘It is truly heartening to see so many bone marrow transplant survivors, from young children to adults, come together and celebrate their joumey of recovery. Watching them return to their normal lives, pursue their education, careers, and dreams, and embrace the future with confidence brings immense satisfaction to us as doctors. Gatherings like these not only strengthen the bond among survivors but also serve as a powerful reminder that hope, resilience, and timely medical intervention can help overcome even the most challenging health battles. They provide a platform for patients and families. to connect, share experiences, and inspire one another with positivity.”

(Prof.) Dr. Rajib De added, “Every BMT survivor’s journey is a story of immense courage, resilience, and hope. Bone Marrow Transplantation has transformed the lives of many patients battling complex blood disorders and cancers, offering them an opportunity to return to healthier lives. According to data from the Indian Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation. (ISBMT), India has completed over 25,000 stem cell transplants to date; however, fewer than 3,000 transplants are performed annually, highlighting the significant gap between the need and availability of transplant care. This emphasises the importance of increasing awareness, improving timely diagnosis, and ensuring access to specialised treatment.
