As stress and anxiety continue to affect people across all age groups, health and wellness experts are recommending regular yoga practice as a natural way to promote mental calmness and emotional balance. They say incorporating a few simple yoga asanas into a daily routine can help reduce stress levels, improve concentration and enhance overall well-being.
Among the most effective postures is Balasana (Child’s Pose), which helps relax the body, release tension in the back and shoulders, and encourage deep, steady breathing. Sukhasana (Easy Pose) is another commonly recommended asana that promotes mindfulness and creates a sense of inner peace during meditation and breathing exercises.
Experts also suggest practising Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose) to relieve fatigue and improve blood circulation. The gentle inversion allows the body to relax while reducing mental and physical exhaustion. Marjaryasana-Bitilasana (Cat-Cow Pose) is known to improve spinal flexibility and synchronise breathing with movement, helping relieve stress-related tension.
Other beneficial poses include Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog), which stretches the entire body and improves blood flow, and Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend), which calms the nervous system and promotes deep relaxation. Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose) is also considered effective in opening the chest, improving breathing and easing fatigue.
The list further includes Baddha Konasana (Butterfly Pose) and Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Butterfly Pose), both of which are known for relaxing the hips and encouraging a restful state. Completing a yoga session with Savasana (Corpse Pose) helps the body absorb the benefits of the practice while allowing the mind to enter a deeply relaxed state.
Health experts emphasise that yoga should be practised with proper breathing techniques and within one’s physical limits. Combined with a healthy diet, adequate sleep and regular physical activity, these asanas can contribute to better stress management and emotional resilience.
