Natural Ways to Keep Mosquitoes Away at Home During Monsoon

The arrival of the monsoon brings relief from scorching temperatures but also creates favourable conditions for mosquitoes to multiply. In Kolkata, waterlogging, humidity and stagnant water often lead to an increase in mosquito activity, raising concerns about mosquito-borne diseases. While mosquito coils and chemical repellents are commonly used inside homes, health experts suggest adopting simpler and more natural methods to reduce exposure to potentially harmful substances.
One of the most effective preventive measures is installing mosquito-proof nets on windows. These barriers can stop mosquitoes from entering rooms while allowing ventilation and fresh air to circulate. Experts also recommend using high-speed fans, as strong air currents can make it difficult for mosquitoes to fly and settle indoors.
Natural oils can provide another option for households looking to reduce their dependence on chemical repellents. Lemongrass oil and neem oil can be used in suitable diffusers, while eucalyptus oil is also considered a natural mosquito deterrent.
Certain plants may also help keep mosquitoes away. Tulsi, mint and lemongrass can be grown in small pots and placed near windows or other entry points. Camphor used appropriately in a diffuser is another option that some households can consider.
However, health experts have raised concerns about prolonged use of mosquito coils and chemical diffusers. According to medical specialists, these products can release fine particles, volatile organic compounds and synthetic insecticides into indoor air. Continuous exposure may irritate the eyes, throat and respiratory system and can contribute to problems such as asthma, allergies and headaches.
The risks may be greater for children, pregnant women and elderly people. Poorly ventilated rooms can further worsen the situation because pollutants released by these products may accumulate indoors.
Experts therefore suggest combining preventive measures instead of relying solely on chemical mosquito repellents. Keeping windows protected with nets, maintaining airflow through fans and using natural repellents can help create a less mosquito-friendly environment. During the monsoon, households should also remain alert to conditions that encourage mosquito breeding. Reducing exposure to mosquitoes is particularly important because their presence can increase the risk of diseases transmitted through mosquito bites.
