IndiGo Launches Cabin Baggage-Only Fare to Offer More Affordable Travel Option

News Mania Desks/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 4th July 2026

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has introduced a new fare category aimed at passengers travelling light, allowing them to book tickets at lower prices by opting out of complimentary checked baggage. The airline announced the launch of its “IndiGo Lite” fare as part of its efforts to provide more flexible and cost-effective travel options for customers.

The new fare category is designed for travellers carrying only cabin baggage and will be available for bookings made from July 1, with travel beginning on July 15. Initially, the offering will be introduced on select domestic and international non-stop routes, with the possibility of expanding to more destinations in the future.

Passengers choosing the Lite fare will be permitted to carry one cabin bag weighing up to 7 kg, along with a small personal item, in accordance with the airline’s cabin baggage policy. However, the fare does not include complimentary checked baggage. Those requiring additional luggage can purchase checked baggage separately, along with optional services such as preferred seat selection, onboard meals, priority boarding and other travel add-ons.

The introduction of the cabin baggage-only fare reflects a growing trend in the aviation industry towards unbundled pricing, where passengers pay only for the services they choose to use. The model is expected to benefit budget-conscious travellers and those on short trips who do not require checked luggage, while also giving customers greater flexibility in tailoring their travel experience. The move comes as airlines increasingly focus on offering differentiated fare options to cater to varying passenger preferences. It also follows a similar initiative introduced by another major Indian carrier, Air India .
