West Bengal Government Makes Bengali Mandatory for Official Government Communication from September 1

Kolkata | July 2026: In a major policy decision aimed at strengthening the use of the state’s official language, the Government of West Bengal has announced that from September 1, all government notifications, applications, and official administrative work will be conducted in the Bengali language.

The initiative has been launched under the slogan:

“Bengali is my language, my right.”

According to the announcement, the policy seeks to promote the wider use of Bengali in governance and public administration while making official communication more accessible to the people of the state.

Key Highlights of the New Policy

From September 1, the following will be carried out in Bengali:

• Government notifications
• Applications submitted to government departments
• Official correspondence and administrative work
• Other government-related documentation and communication

The state government said the move is intended to reinforce the linguistic and cultural identity of West Bengal while encouraging greater public participation in government services through the use of the Bengali language.

Officials are expected to issue detailed implementation guidelines to various departments before the policy comes into effect. Departments will also make necessary administrative arrangements to ensure a smooth transition to Bengali in official communications.
