India’s Ashish Yadav clinched a silver medal in the men’s javelin throw at the World Athletics U20 Championships, giving the country its first medal of the competition. His performance also marked India’s return to the podium in the event at the global junior championships.
Yadav produced his best effort of 74.09 metres in the final to secure second place. South Africa’s Heymans dominated the competition, winning the gold medal with a throw of 80.50 metres. Dominica’s James completed the podium with a bronze-winning effort of 73.89 metres.
Another Indian competitor, T. Dharanidharan, also featured in the final and finished sixth after recording a best throw of 72.35 metres. His performance added to India’s strong showing in the javelin competition. Yadav’s silver is significant in the context of India’s history at the World U20 Championships. He became only the second Indian male javelin thrower to win a medal at the event, following in the footsteps of Neeraj Chopra, who created history by winning gold at the 2016 edition.
Chopra’s triumph in 2016 remains one of the landmark performances in Indian junior athletics. He won the title with a then-world U20 record of 86.48 metres, setting the foundation for a remarkable international career that would later see him emerge as one of India’s leading track-and-field athletes.
Yadav’s achievement comes as another encouraging sign for Indian javelin throwing, an event that has gained considerable prominence in the country over the past decade. His podium finish at the junior world level underlines the emergence of a new generation of Indian throwers. With Yadav securing silver and Dharanidharan finishing sixth, India made a strong impression in the men’s javelin final. The result also provides further encouragement for the country’s athletics programme as it continues to develop young talent for the international stage.
