FSSAI Crackdown Pushes Food Companies to Withdraw Misleading ‘100%’ and Health Claims

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has intensified its scrutiny of food labels, advertisements and product claims, prompting several major food companies to withdraw or modify claims that were found to be misleading or unsupported. The regulator said companies have begun taking corrective measures after receiving notices over violations related to food labelling, health claims and product descriptions.

Among the companies facing regulatory action is Amway India Enterprises, which agreed to remove the term “Energy Drink” from its XS range of caffeinated beverages. The company has also taken steps to remove the word from product artwork, its website and promotional material. Revised packaging is expected to be introduced with future production, while the company has sought permission to sell existing stock carrying the earlier description until inventories are exhausted.

Amway was also asked to withdraw the “100% Pure” description from its coconut oil product. The company subsequently removed the claim from packaging and promotional material and discontinued the old stock from sales channels. New packaging is being prepared for a phased rollout in the coming months.

FSSAI also highlighted action involving Juza Foods, which faced objections over several claims made for its baby food products. These included descriptions suggesting that the products were natural, suitable for sensitive babies, easy to digest and capable of supporting immunity and stronger bones. Claims such as “100% Ragi” and comparisons involving calcium content were also questioned. The company agreed to remove the disputed claims and temporarily shut its online sales website while making the required corrections and seeking changes to its licence.

Mondelez India Foods, which markets products including Bournvita, also withdrew health and nutrient-comparison claims and related advertisements from e-commerce platforms after regulatory intervention. Sapiens Labs similarly removed claims and advertisements after FSSAI flagged a misleading statement. In another case, a product carrying a misleading trade name was delisted from an e-commerce platform following regulatory action.
