Tiger Worm Toilets Turn Human Waste Into Compost, But Parasite Risk Remains

Scientists studying an innovative sanitation system that uses worms to process human waste have found that potentially dangerous parasite eggs can survive the treatment process. The findings raise concerns about the safety of using the resulting vermicompost as fertiliser without additional treatment.
Known as tiger worm toilets, these systems use composting worms such as Eisenia fetida to break down faecal waste inside a biodigester. The approach is designed to reduce waste accumulation and provide a non-sewered sanitation option, particularly in locations where conventional sewage infrastructure is difficult to establish.
Researchers examined whether the worms could destroy eggs of Ascaris, a parasitic roundworm that can infect humans. The study used laboratory-scale systems designed to replicate conditions inside tiger worm toilets. Pig faeces containing a known quantity of Ascaris suum eggs were introduced into the systems and monitored for four weeks.
The results showed that the worms did not destroy or deactivate the parasite eggs. Some eggs remained in the vermicompost, while others were detected in different parts of the treatment system, including the coir and gravel layers and the liquid effluent. Researchers also confirmed that eggs recovered from the vermicompost remained viable.
The findings are significant because tiger worm toilets are increasingly being considered as an alternative sanitation technology. The worms can effectively break down faecal solids and reduce the volume of waste that accumulates in sanitation systems. However, the study indicates that this biological process alone may not eliminate all disease-causing organisms.
Researchers therefore caution against assuming that the material produced by these systems is automatically safe for agricultural use. The study concluded that the vermicompost and effluent may require additional treatment or safe disposal, particularly in regions where ascariasis, the disease caused by Ascaris infection, is widespread. While tiger worm toilets can offer environmental and practical benefits, ensuring that potentially harmful parasites are removed remains essential before their by-products can be safely reused.
