Sensex, Nifty Fall as US-Iran Tensions and Oil Prices Weigh on Markets

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 8th September 2026

Indian equity markets ended lower on Monday as rising tensions between the United States and Iran, elevated crude oil prices and concerns over US interest rates weighed on investor sentiment. The benchmark Sensex declined 382.62 points, or 0.5%, to close at 76,132.81, while the Nifty50 dropped 118.55 points, or 0.5%, to finish at 23,779.15. The decline reflected cautious trading amid weak global signals and concerns over the potential impact of geopolitical developments on the economy.

One of the key factors affecting sentiment was the rise in crude oil prices amid concerns over the conflict involving the US and Iran. Brent crude was trading close to $97 a barrel, raising worries for oil-importing economies such as India. A sustained increase in crude prices could put pressure on inflation, corporate costs and the country’s import bill.

Investors were also assessing expectations surrounding US monetary policy. Stronger-than-anticipated US employment data raised concerns that the Federal Reserve could maintain elevated interest rates or potentially consider a rate increase. Higher US interest rates can reduce the attractiveness of emerging-market assets and encourage investors to shift funds towards US markets.

Information technology stocks came under selling pressure as expectations of prolonged high US interest rates created additional concerns for companies that depend heavily on the American market. Weakness in IT shares contributed to the broader decline in domestic indices.

Market participants also remained cautious because of uncertainty in international markets. Geopolitical tensions, fluctuations in crude prices and changing expectations regarding US monetary policy have increased volatility across global financial markets. The fall in Indian equities came despite continued attention on domestic economic fundamentals. Investors remained focused on developments that could influence corporate earnings, inflation and capital flows in the coming sessions.

Analysts are expected to closely monitor crude oil movements, developments in the US-Iran situation and signals from the Federal Reserve for further direction. Any escalation in geopolitical tensions or a prolonged rise in energy prices could continue to weigh on risk appetite. For Indian markets, the combination of expensive crude, global uncertainty and concerns about US interest rates remains a key challenge. Investors are likely to remain cautious until there is greater clarity on these factors and their potential impact on the global and domestic economies.
