NCP (SP) Questions Maharashtra Government Over Delay in Drought Compensation

The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) has questioned the Maharashtra government over the timeline for providing compensation to farmers affected by drought conditions across the state. The party has sought clarity from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on when financial assistance for crop losses will actually reach farmers.

The Maharashtra government recently declared drought conditions under the first trigger mechanism in 265 talukas. The decision followed an assessment of rainfall, crop conditions and other factors indicating stress in several parts of the state. Following the declaration, the government announced a series of relief measures aimed at supporting affected communities. These include exemptions related to land revenue, restructuring of crop loans, concessions on electricity bills and arrangements for drinking water and fodder in areas facing shortages.

However, the NCP (SP) has raised questions over the absence of an immediate timeline for direct compensation to farmers who have suffered crop losses. The party has sought details of when farmers will receive financial assistance and how the losses will be assessed. Under the government’s resolution, financial assistance for crop damage is expected to be considered separately after field-level assessments are completed. Officials will have to evaluate the extent of losses before determining the assistance payable to affected farmers.

The opposition party has argued that farmers facing crop losses require timely support and that relief measures need to translate into actual assistance on the ground. It has also sought greater clarity from the government regarding the process and schedule for assessing agricultural damage.

The drought declaration covers a large number of talukas and comes amid concerns over the impact of inadequate rainfall and water availability on agriculture. Farmers in affected areas are facing difficulties related to crop production, irrigation and household requirements.

The state government’s measures are intended to provide immediate relief while the assessment of crop damage is undertaken. The final compensation process, however, will depend on the findings of field surveys and subsequent decisions on the extent of financial assistance. The NCP (SP) has continued to press the government for details on the implementation of the relief package and the expected timeline for payments. The issue is likely to remain a key concern for farmers and political parties as the state assesses the impact of the drought.
