Calcutta Boys’ School Hosts 10th Clifford Hicks International Debate Finale

Kolkata: The 10th edition of the Clifford Hicks International Debate concluded at Calcutta Boys’ School, Kolkata, with a grand closing ceremony and prize distribution, bringing together students from more than 100 schools across India and abroad for five days of intellectual engagement and spirited competition. The event was organised by the Calcutta Boys’ School Literary Society in association with the CBS Debating Society and the CBS United Students Organisation.

The competition was conducted across two categories, with participants demonstrating exceptional skills in public speaking, critical thinking, research and persuasive argumentation. The semi-finals witnessed intense contests, with eight teams qualifying for the final rounds.

In Category 2, the finalists debated the motion, “This House Believes That Technology and Social Media Algorithms Now Control Our Choices More Than Our Own Free Will.” Following an engaging contest, Wisdom World School, Wakad, emerged as the winner, while Bishop Cotton Boys’ School, Bengaluru, secured the runners-up position. Chayanak Kausik of Bishop Cotton Boys’ School and Nishant Gijare of Wisdom World School were jointly adjudged Best Speakers.

The Category 1 final centred on the motion, “This House Believes That Peace Secured Through Injustice Is a Fragile Illusion, More Corrosive and Destructive Than Prolonged Conflict.” The debate encouraged participants to examine the complex relationship between justice, peace and conflict, drawing on historical injustices and contemporary global challenges to present their arguments.

After a closely contested final, The Bishop’s Co-Ed School, Undri, emerged as the Category 1 winner, while Calcutta Boys’ School, Kolkata, finished as runners-up. Adrish Hossain of Calcutta Boys’ School was adjudged Best Speaker in the category.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Raja McGee, Principal and Secretary of Calcutta Boys’ School, said, “The Clifford Hicks International Debate reflects our commitment to nurturing independent thinkers who can engage with complex issues with intellectual honesty, empathy and courage. By bringing together students from India and abroad, the competition encourages young people to question assumptions, respect differing perspectives and develop the confidence to express their ideas with clarity. We believe that such platforms are essential in preparing students to become responsible leaders who value reasoned discourse and justice.”

The closing ceremony was attended by Chief Guests Shri Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, and Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. C. Selvin, Area Bishop of the Lucknow Episcopal Area of MCI and Chairman of CBS Group of Schools. The occasion also featured the release of the school’s annual magazine, Pulse 2025–26, highlighting the institution’s achievements and activities.

The finale marked a fitting conclusion to the five-day event, reaffirming Calcutta Boys’ School’s commitment to academic excellence, intellectual rigour and meaningful dialogue among young minds.
