News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 12th October 2026

Veteran Marathi actress Madhu Kambikar passed away in Pune on October 12, 2026, at the age of 73 following a prolonged illness. Her death marks the loss of a prominent figure in Marathi entertainment who made significant contributions to cinema, theatre, television and Maharashtra’s traditional folk arts.

Kambikar enjoyed a career spanning more than four decades and earned recognition for her versatile performances across different mediums. She was particularly associated with Lavani, the traditional Maharashtrian folk dance form, through which she helped bring regional cultural traditions to wider audiences. Her work established her as a respected performer in both folk entertainment and mainstream Marathi cinema.

The actress appeared in several notable Marathi films, including Ek Hota Vidushak, Zapatlela, Debu and Yeu Ka Gharat. Her performances reflected her ability to move between dramatic roles and character-driven stories. She also worked with renowned filmmaker and actor Dada Kondke, whose films played an influential role in Marathi popular cinema.

Beyond films, Kambikar remained closely connected to the stage and television. Her performances helped preserve and popularise traditional Maharashtrian art forms, particularly at a time when regional folk entertainment was adapting to changing audience preferences.

However, her career was affected by serious health problems. In 2016, she reportedly suffered a stroke while performing Lavani in Mumbai. The incident significantly affected her health and eventually kept her away from stage performances, limiting her ability to continue the work that had defined much of her professional life.

Throughout her career, Kambikar received several honours for her contribution to Marathi cinema and performing arts, including six Maharashtra State Film Awards. Her work earned her recognition among audiences who appreciated her commitment to regional storytelling and folk traditions. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over her demise, acknowledging the loss to the state’s cultural and artistic community.

Kambikar’s passing has brought renewed attention to her enduring contribution to Marathi cinema and Lavani dance. Through her performances on screen and stage, she helped keep Maharashtra’s cultural heritage alive while leaving behind a body of work that continues to represent an important chapter in regional entertainment.
