RBI’s New Forex Rules: How India’s Revised Currency Measures Could Affect Your Foreign Holiday Budget
News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 13th October 2026

Planning an international holiday may require closer attention to currency movements following the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) revised foreign exchange rules. The measures aim to address speculative activity in the currency market and could indirectly influence the cost of overseas travel for Indian tourists.
The RBI has tightened regulations governing certain rupee-linked foreign exchange derivative positions held by banks. Under the revised framework, the threshold for specified positions without underlying exposure has been reduced from $100 million to $5 million. The move is intended to curb excessive speculative activity and improve stability in the forex market.
Although the rules do not directly restrict individuals from purchasing foreign currency for holidays, fluctuations in the Indian rupee exchange rate could affect travel expenses. A weaker rupee generally makes foreign currencies more expensive for Indian travellers, increasing the amount they pay for accommodation, shopping, dining and other expenses abroad.
For example, if the rupee depreciates against the US dollar, travellers may need to spend more Indian currency to obtain the same amount of dollars. Similar changes in exchange rates can affect expenses in destinations where payments are made in euros, pounds or other foreign currencies.
The impact on individual travel budgets will depend on currency movements, bank charges, exchange margins and the timing of foreign currency purchases. The RBI’s measures do not automatically mean that overseas holidays will become more expensive, as exchange rates are influenced by several domestic and international factors.
Travellers can take practical steps to manage their international travel budget. Comparing exchange rates offered by authorised dealers, checking foreign transaction fees on debit and credit cards, and planning currency purchases in advance may help reduce costs. Carrying a suitable combination of cash and cards can also provide flexibility while travelling.
Experts generally advise holidaymakers to account for possible exchange-rate fluctuations when estimating expenses rather than relying on a single conversion rate. For Indians planning a foreign holiday, monitoring exchange rates and budgeting carefully remain essential to keeping travel expenses under control.
