News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee / 23rd October 2026

Traditional Indian dietary practices can play an important role in promoting healthier lifestyles, offering a balanced combination of nutrition, affordability and sustainability, according to a report published by FNB News. The report highlights how everyday foods such as millets, pulses, whole grains, seasonal fruits and vegetables can contribute to better nutrition without requiring expensive ingredients or specialised diet plans.

Dr Sujit Paul of Zota Healthcare emphasised the importance of returning to traditional eating habits, noting that nutritious meals can be prepared using locally available ingredients. Familiar combinations such as dal and rice or roti served with vegetables can provide essential nutrients when prepared with suitable ingredients and consumed in appropriate portions.

Traditional Indian diets often incorporate a variety of food groups, helping people obtain carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre. Pulses and lentils provide plant-based protein, while whole grains and millets contribute fibre and other essential nutrients. Seasonal fruits and vegetables further enrich meals with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These foods can form part of a balanced diet and may support digestive health when included alongside other nutritious ingredients.

Cooking methods also influence the nutritional quality of meals. Techniques such as steaming, boiling and roasting can help reduce the need for excessive oil compared with certain frying methods. Limiting highly processed foods and moderating the use of oil, salt and sugar can further improve everyday dietary habits.

Another advantage of traditional food practices is their reliance on locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. These choices can make healthy eating more accessible while reducing dependence on costly packaged products and imported foods marketed as superfoods. As lifestyle-related health concerns continue to attract attention, traditional Indian meals offer a practical approach to improving everyday nutrition without abandoning familiar food habits.
