Meghalaya Police has strengthened security across Shillong ahead of Durga Puja following an arson incident in the Mawbah area, where unidentified individuals allegedly set fire to an abandoned scooter on Saturday night. The incident has prompted authorities to increase surveillance and intensify patrolling to prevent further disturbances during the festive period.

According to officials, the scooter was set ablaze at approximately 9:45 pm. In response, police have increased foot and mobile patrols, established additional pickets and extended night patrolling until around 6 am. The measures were decided during a high-level security review meeting attended by Chief Secretary, Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang, Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Hari Prasanta and representatives of the Central Puja Committee.

Prasanta said the situation in Shillong remained normal and described the arson as an isolated incident. He added that no arrests had been made so far. However, police have stepped up security arrangements as a precaution to maintain law and order and ensure that residents can celebrate Durga Puja peacefully.

The Central Puja Committee has also appealed to residents to preserve communal harmony during the festivities. Its president, Naba Bhattacharjee, urged people to celebrate peacefully, irrespective of caste, community or religion.

Meanwhile, the BJP’s 18-West Mandal condemned the arson and called for a time-bound investigation into the incident. The organisation stressed the need to identify those responsible and ensure appropriate action.

The Shillong All Faiths Forum also appealed to residents to maintain peace and avoid spreading rumours that could aggravate tensions. The forum emphasised the importance of unity and mutual understanding among different communities, particularly during a major religious festival. Police have urged residents to cooperate with security personnel and report suspicious activities, while officials and community representatives continue to stress restraint, peaceful celebrations and communal solidarity.
