1996 – TWA Flight 800 Disaster
Trans World Airlines Flight 800 exploded shortly after takeoff from New York and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Long Island, killing all 230 people on board. The tragedy remains one of the deadliest aviation disasters in U.S. history.

1996 – Madras Officially Becomes Chennai
The Government of India officially renamed Madras as Chennai, reflecting the city’s historical and cultural identity. The change became a significant milestone in India’s broader movement to restore traditional place names.



Observances on July 17

World Day for International Justice is observed globally to commemorate the adoption of the Rome Statute in 1998, which established the International Criminal Court (ICC).
