A seven-year-old boy died after a brick column collapsed during a Dahi Handi celebration in Mumbai’s Malad West, turning a festive gathering into a tragedy. The incident took place as residents and participants had gathered in the area to celebrate Janmashtami. According to reports, the child was near the celebration site when the brick structure suddenly collapsed and fell on him. He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital for treatment. However, doctors could not save him.
The incident occurred as Mumbai witnessed Dahi Handi celebrations at several locations across the city. The festival is a major part of Janmashtami festivities in Maharashtra and attracts large crowds, with groups of participants, known as Govindas, forming human pyramids to reach and break a clay pot suspended above the ground.
Apart from the fatal incident in Malad West, several other accidents were reported during the celebrations. At least 32 Govindas were injured in separate Dahi Handi-related incidents across Mumbai, according to reports.
Dahi Handi celebrations traditionally bring together large groups of residents and participants and are accompanied by music, processions and cultural programmes. The events are particularly popular in Mumbai, where neighbourhood groups and organisers compete to break pots placed at considerable heights. The incident also prompted authorities to examine the circumstances surrounding the collapse of the brick column.
Officials are expected to determine how the structure came down and whether any negligence was involved. The investigation will also establish the circumstances in which the child was present near the structure at the time of the accident.
Meanwhile, celebrations continued across Mumbai, with Govinda groups taking part in Dahi Handi events at different venues. Despite the injuries reported in various parts of the city, the festival drew large crowds as devotees marked Janmashtami with traditional ceremonies and community celebrations. The fatal incident in Malad West, however, became one of the most serious episodes associated with this year’s festivities.
