BJP Sweeps Nandigram Bypoll With Record Margin, Wins Rejinagar in West Bengal

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a major electoral victory in West Bengal, winning the Nandigram Assembly bypoll by a record margin of more than 1.2 lakh votes and securing the Rejinagar Assembly constituency as well. The results, declared on October 9, are being viewed as a significant political development ahead of the state’s next Assembly election.

In Nandigram, BJP candidate Hasi Rani Rath defeated her nearest rival by a margin of 1,22,753 votes, marking a decisive win for the party in a constituency that has remained central to West Bengal’s political contest. The result strengthened the BJP’s position in the region and gave the party an opportunity to highlight its growing electoral support in the state.

The BJP also won the Rejinagar bypoll, where its candidate Shankharavh Sarkar secured victory by a margin of more than 75,000 votes. The scale of the wins in both constituencies provided the party with a major boost and intensified questions about the electoral prospects of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The bypoll results are particularly significant because West Bengal has witnessed an intense political rivalry between the BJP and the TMC in recent years. The ruling party, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has traditionally relied on its organisational network and support among various social groups to maintain its position in the state. The latest results, however, present a challenge to that political dominance.

The BJP described the victories as evidence of growing public confidence in its leadership and policies. Party leaders also highlighted the outcome in Rejinagar, where the result could influence political calculations regarding minority voters and the BJP’s efforts to expand its support base beyond its traditional constituencies. The defeats are likely to trigger fresh scrutiny of the TMC’s campaign strategy, local-level organisation and ability to retain voter support.

With the next West Bengal Assembly election approaching, the BJP’s performance in Nandigram and Rejinagar is expected to shape the political narrative in the state. The victories have given the party renewed momentum, while the TMC faces the challenge of assessing the reasons behind the defeats and strengthening its position before the next major electoral contest.
