India Calls Elon Musk’s ‘Oligarch’ Allegations Baseless Amid Starlink Regulatory Dispute

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 10th October 2026

The Indian government has rejected allegations by Elon Musk that powerful business interests are attempting to obstruct Starlink’s entry into the country, describing claims that India’s internet regulatory framework is unfair as “baseless and misconceived”. The exchange comes as the billionaire’s satellite internet company awaits the necessary approvals to begin commercial operations in one of the world’s largest telecommunications markets.

The Ministry of Communications defended India’s regulatory framework, maintaining that satellite communication companies must comply with established licensing conditions, security requirements and spectrum-related rules. The government’s response followed Musk’s remarks on social media platform X, where the SpaceX chief alleged that unnamed “oligarchs” were attempting to protect their market dominance by preventing Starlink from operating in India.

The dispute has drawn attention to the growing competition in India’s satellite internet market, where several companies are preparing to offer broadband connectivity through satellites. Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, aims to provide high-speed internet access, particularly in remote and underserved areas where conventional telecommunications infrastructure remains limited.

Starlink has obtained a licence to operate in India, but it must meet additional regulatory and security requirements before launching commercial services. Company representatives have indicated that the service has developed India-specific security arrangements to comply with the country’s regulations. Other players, including Reliance Jio’s satellite communication venture and Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb, have also received licences. However, security assessments and spectrum-related clearances remain important steps before commercial operations can begin.

The government has maintained that companies must fulfil the applicable requirements rather than receive exemptions based on their international standing or commercial interests. The authorities have also indicated that the approval process applies across the sector. As Starlink’s India launch remains dependent on regulatory clearances, the disagreement between Musk and the government has brought renewed scrutiny to the rules governing satellite communications.
