Kolkata: Unmesh Child Development Foundation organised its annual Anandamela, a special fun fair for children with special needs, ahead of the Durga Puja holidays, celebrating creativity, confidence and community participation.
Over the past three to four years, the initiative has fostered a spirit of cooperation among children, parents and teachers. Mothers prepare homemade delicacies and transform classrooms into colourful stalls, while teachers join them in selling the items. Visitors purchase coupons from a designated counter to shop at the fair, with proceeds distributed among the mothers according to the coupons collected at their respective stalls.
The fair follows an innovative two-session format. In one session, teachers manage the stalls while mothers enjoy shopping with their children. In the other, mothers take charge of the stalls as teachers become customers, ensuring everyone experiences both sides of the celebration.
This year, a special highlight was an egg curry prepared by a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The dish received an enthusiastic response from visitors, who appreciated its taste. The child also possesses skills in sewing, drawing and making tea, demonstrating the diverse talents children can develop when provided with encouragement and opportunities.
More than a marketplace, Anandamela has become a celebration of inclusion, dignity and self-confidence. Through this initiative, Unmesh Child Development Foundation reinforces the message that every child has unique abilities and deserves opportunities to learn, create and shine.
