New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence has signed a ₹586-crore contract with Accurate Industrial Controls Private Limited to equip the Indian Army’s T-72 and T-90 main battle tanks with indigenous Auxiliary Power Units (APUs), in a move aimed at improving operational efficiency and equipment reliability. The auxiliary power units are designed to supply electricity to a tank’s onboard systems when its main engine is switched off. This can help reduce unnecessary engine idling, conserve fuel and lower engine wear while supporting essential electronic and communication equipment. The procurement also reflects India’s continued emphasis on domestic defence manufacturing and the development of indigenous technologies for military modernisation. The T-72 and T-90 tanks form an important part of the Indian Army’s armoured fleet. Equipping them with locally developed auxiliary power systems is expected to support maintenance efficiency and improve operational sustainability. The contract underscores the government’s broader push to strengthen defence self-reliance while upgrading the capabilities of existing military platforms.
