Radhika Apte Criticises Colourism in South Indian Cinema, Questions Preference for Fair-Skinned Actresses

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 29th October 2026

Actor Radhika Apte has criticised the casting practices in parts of the South Indian film industry, questioning the preference for fair-skinned actresses from North India over local performers. In a recent interview, the actor expressed reservations about the industry’s approach to casting and said she did not support practices that reinforced colour-based discrimination.

Apte, who has worked across Hindi and several South Indian film industries, spoke about the challenges surrounding representation and the importance of casting performers who understand the language and cultural context of a film. She suggested that the preference for actresses with lighter skin complexions raised questions about the industry’s attitudes towards appearance and regional identity.

The actor’s remarks have brought renewed attention to the issue of colourism in Indian cinema, where casting decisions have frequently been debated in relation to skin tone, beauty standards and opportunities for local talent. Critics have argued that an emphasis on fair skin can reinforce narrow ideas of beauty while limiting representation for performers with darker complexions.

Apte’s comments also highlighted the significance of language in filmmaking. Actors who are familiar with the language in which a film is made may be better positioned to understand the nuances of dialogue, cultural references and characterisation. Her observations have revived discussions about whether casting decisions adequately reflect the linguistic and cultural identities of the regions depicted on screen.

Having worked in films across different languages, Apte has developed a career that extends beyond Bollywood. Her views on casting and representation have therefore attracted attention amid continuing conversations about diversity and inclusivity in the Indian entertainment industry. The actor is currently associated with Akka, an upcoming Netflix series featuring Keerthy Suresh. The project has drawn interest as Apte continues to explore roles across different formats and genres.

The debate extends beyond individual casting decisions to broader questions about who gets opportunities, how regional identities are represented and whether the industry is moving towards more inclusive portrayals of Indian women. Apte’s criticism adds to ongoing calls for filmmakers to prioritise talent, linguistic familiarity and suitability for a role rather than relying on conventional notions of physical attractiveness.
