Trump Sparks Outrage With Remarks on Oman Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions

U.S. President Donald Trump has triggered diplomatic controversy after making sharp remarks directed at Oman during escalating tensions over control of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The comments, delivered during a Cabinet meeting at the White House, have raised concerns among international observers and Gulf allies about the growing instability in the region.

Trump reportedly warned against any move by Iran or Oman to exert influence over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes. Stressing that the passage “must remain open to everybody,” the U.S. President allegedly said Oman needed to “behave” or face severe consequences, including threats of military action. The statement immediately drew criticism from analysts and diplomats, given Oman’s longstanding partnership with Washington.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a crucial maritime corridor through which nearly 20 percent of the global oil supply passes. Any disruption to shipping in the narrow waterway could have major consequences for international energy markets, global trade and fuel prices. The region has already witnessed heightened military tensions amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Iran and Israel.

Reports indicate that Iran and Oman had recently been involved in discussions concerning the management of shipping transit through the strait. Iranian state-linked media suggested proposals related to maritime access and transit arrangements were being explored, though no formal agreement has been confirmed publicly.

Oman has historically maintained close ties with the United States while also serving as an important mediator in Middle Eastern diplomacy. The Gulf nation has often facilitated backchannel negotiations between Washington and Tehran, including during earlier attempts to revive nuclear talks with Iran. Because of this diplomatic role, Trump’s remarks were viewed by many experts as unusually aggressive toward a traditional regional ally.

Iran strongly condemned the comments, describing them as inflammatory and irresponsible. Regional observers fear the latest exchange could further intensify tensions across the Gulf at a time when concerns over maritime security and military escalation are already high. International markets are also closely monitoring developments around the Strait of Hormuz, amid fears that any instability there could disrupt global oil supplies and shipping operations.
