An Air India flight heading to Delhi had to return to Chicago in the US reportedly after all but one of the aircraft’s restrooms became unusable. As reported by the well-known aviation site View From The Wing, Air India Flight 216 departed from Chicago but had to return after 11 out of its 12 toilets became blocked.
As stated in the report, the choice to return was decided approximately four-and-a-half hours into the flight while the aircraft was flying over Greenland. The journey back took the same duration, leading to a 10-hour experience for travelers.
There was just one toilet available for more than 300 passengers on the flight. A user on X recounted the disorder during the flight.
The airline confirmed the flight made a U-turn after being airborne for around five hours due to a technical issue.
“AI126, operating Chicago to Delhi on March 6, 2025, air-returned to Chicago due to a technical issue. Upon landing at Chicago, all passengers and crew disembarked normally and have been provided with accommodation to minimise inconvenience. Alternative arrangements are being made to fly the passengers to their destination,” a statement by Air India Spokesperson said.
The spokesperson also said that full refunds on cancellation and complimentary rescheduling are also being offered to passengers if opted by them.
One customer said they had booked a first class ticket for their cousin to fly for a wedding in India using their travel LifeMiles with the Avianca airliner.
“We’re now in the midst of customer service hell with Avianca, Lifemiles and Air India to figure out how to get a refund for the miles ticket,” the frustrated client told .
