News Mania Desk /Bobby B / 14th February 2026

February 14 is observed by many across India as a day of mourning and remembrance for the brave personnel who lost their lives in the tragic Pulwama terror attack of 2019. The incident stands as one of the deadliest attacks on Indian security forces in recent history and remains deeply etched in the nation’s collective memory.

What Happened

On 14 February 2019, a suicide bomber targeted a convoy of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) near Lethpora in the district of Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. The attacker rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a bus carrying CRPF personnel. The powerful blast killed 40 security personnel and left many others seriously injured.

The attack occurred on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway while a large convoy of vehicles was transporting personnel to their deployment locations.

Responsibility and Investigation

The Pakistan-based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing. The attack triggered widespread condemnation both within India and internationally. Investigations by Indian agencies traced logistical support networks and local assistance connected to the planning and execution of the attack.

National Response

The incident led to a strong political, diplomatic, and security response from India. Then Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack and assured the nation that the sacrifice of the soldiers would not go unanswered. India subsequently undertook major counter-terror measures and intensified security operations and cross-border pressure against terror infrastructure.

Diplomatic ties and trade preferences between India and Pakistan were also affected in the aftermath, and global forums saw renewed debate on state support for terror groups.

Honouring the Martyrs

Every year on 14 February, tribute ceremonies, candlelight marches, and memorial services are held across the country. Citizens, security forces, schools, institutions, and civil organizations pay homage to the fallen personnel through:

  • Wreath-laying ceremonies
  • Memorial runs and vigils
  • Social media tribute campaigns
  • Educational remembrance events
  • Support initiatives for martyrs’ families

Their sacrifice is remembered as a symbol of courage, duty, and service to the nation.

Legacy

The Pulwama attack reshaped India’s internal security discussions and counter-terror strategies. It also strengthened public recognition of the risks faced daily by paramilitary and armed forces personnel. For many Indians, the date serves as a solemn reminder that national security comes at a profound human cost.
