16-Year-Old Muslim Girl Makes History with Kathakali Debut at Kerala Kalamandalam

In a landmark moment for Kerala’s cultural heritage, 16-year-old Sabri has become the first Muslim girl to perform Kathakali at the prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam, a nearly century-old institution dedicated to preserving classical art forms.
On Vijayadashami, Sabri stepped onto the Kalamandalam stage in the role of Lord Krishna during the traditional purappadu, the ceremonial opening of Kathakali performances. Her debut marks a breakthrough for inclusivity in an art form historically dominated by men and rooted in Hindu temple traditions.
Sabri’s passion for Kathakali was sparked during childhood, when she often accompanied her father, Nizam, a photographer, to cultural events. Captivated by the elaborate costumes, striking makeup, and intense expressions, she was determined to master the art. With guidance from Kalamandalam Gopi, a veteran Kathakali guru, she began rigorous training in mudras, expressions, and movements that form the foundation of the dance-drama.
Admission into Kalamandalam was not without challenges. Kathakali only recently opened its doors to female students, and Sabri faced skepticism about her choice of path. However, her determination, coupled with her family’s support, enabled her to pursue the demanding schedule of early-morning rehearsals alongside her academic studies.
Her achievement is being seen as a significant step toward broadening access to classical art forms across gender and community lines. Teachers at Kalamandalam praised her discipline and dedication, while cultural observers noted the performance as a “turning point” in Kathakali’s evolution.
Sabri hopes her journey will inspire other young girls, especially from minority backgrounds, to take up classical arts. “I want to show that Kathakali belongs to everyone,” she reportedly said.
Her debut symbolizes not only her personal triumph but also a moment of cultural transformation—blending tradition with new possibilities of representation and inclusivity.
