The reported gangrape of a 19-year-old woman by 23 individuals over six days has caused widespread outrage throughout the nation, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and instruct officials to impose the ‘harshest penalties’ on those responsible. As per the complaint, the survivor was assaulted by 23 men at various sites from March 29 to April 4. On April 6, the police received a complaint from the survivor’s family about this matter.

Authorities had previously stated that a case was filed under sections 70(1) (gang rape), 74 (assault or application of criminal force against a woman with the intention to dishonor her), 123 (inflicting harm by means of poison, etc., intending to commit an offense), 126(2) (unlawful restraint), 127(2) (illegal confinement), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

To date, authorities have apprehended 12 out of the 23 individuals charged in the case. The individuals have been recognized as Raj Vishwakarma, Sameer, Ayush, Sohail, Danish, Anmol, Sajid, Zahir, Imran, Jaib, Aman, and Raj Khan.

Vidush Saxena, the additional police commissioner of Cantonment, stated that the 19-year-old woman went out with several young men on March 29, and when she failed to come home, her family filed a missing persons report on April 4.  Although she didn’t report the rape to the police at the time of her rescue, her family filed a complaint claiming gangrape on April 6.

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a detailed briefing from officials regarding the alleged gang rape of a 19-year-old in his constituency. A declaration from the Uttar Pradesh government mentioned that the police commissioner, divisional commissioner, and district magistrate addressed the “recent rape crime incident in the city.”

“He instructed them to take the strictest possible action against the culprits and to implement appropriate measures to prevent such incidents in the future,” it said.
