Top Court seeks removal of DY Chandrachud from official residence, writes to government

The administration of the Supreme Court (SC) has officially communicated with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, requesting prompt measures to evict Bungalow No. 5, Krishna Menon Marg, presently occupied by former Chief Justice of India, Justice DY Chandrachud.

The SC administration states that Justice Chandrachud has remained in the official residence past the allowed timeframe. According to Rule 3B of the 2022 Supreme Court Judges Rules, a former Chief Justice is permitted to keep official housing for a maximum of six months after retirement.

The correspondence states that the six-month duration ended on May 10, 2025. Furthermore, a unique retention authorization that was provided also expired on May 31, 2025. The letter states that the six-month timeframe ended on May 10, 2025. Moreover, a unique retention permission that was granted also expired on May 31, 2025. The administration stated that the bungalow belongs to the official Supreme Court residence pool and must be returned for reallocation. The administration announced that the bungalow is included in the official Supreme Court housing inventory and must be returned for redistribution.

The letter, which was submitted to the Housing Ministry, calls for the possession of the bungalow to be taken from Justice Chandrachud “without any further delay.”

“I am to request you to take the possession of Bungalow No. 5, Krishna Menon Marg, from Hon’ble Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud without any further delay as not only the permission that was granted for retention… has expired on 31st May, 2025, but also the period of six months provided in Rule 3B of the 2022 Rules has expired on 10th May, 2025,” says the letter from a Supreme Court official to ministry’s secretary dated July 1.
