4.0 magnitude earthquake jolts Delhi-NCR out of sleep, big tremors, rumbling noise

Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) experienced strong tremors when a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck the national capital early on Monday. The epicenter was located close to Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, south Delhi. The National Centre for Seismology tweeted that the earthquake hit at a depth of five kilometres at 5:36 am.

The official stated that a loud noise was detected when the earthquake struck Delhi-NCR, with the tremors persisting for 35 seconds. The rumbling noise experienced during the earthquake may have been due to its shallow depth. It might have been caused by shifts in tectonic plates and multiple energy releases. Numerous individuals fled their homes in fear after feeling the intense shakes.

Footage of individuals outside their homes and fans vibrating during the earthquake became popular on social media. No immediate reports indicated any damage or injuries. The Dhaula Kuan region, close to a lake, has been undergoing low-magnitude tremors every two to three years. The official stated that an earthquake measuring 3.3 occurred in 2015.

“Delhi has been experiencing minor earthquakes. This earthquake occurred in Dhaula Kuan. In 2007, an earthquake of 4.6 magnitude occurred there. There is nothing to worry about. It’s a seismic zone there. After the 4.0 magnitude quake, the aftershock will be less by 1.2 magnitude. It is natural as it will heal it,” Dr OP Mishra, Director, National Centre for Seismology (NCS), told

He mentioned that the Dhaula Kuan area has experienced 420 minor earthquakes, and the national capital has been secure from such events for many years. The Delhi Police and the Delhi Fire Service received no reports of any unusual incidents during the earthquake.

“Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation,” tweeted PM Modi
