40 Arrested Over Violence in Maheshtala; Bengal BJP Demands Central Forces Deployment

In the aftermath of intense political violence in West Bengal’s Maheshtala, located in South 24 Parganas district, at least 40 people have been arrested, authorities confirmed on Thursday. The incident, which took place earlier this week, has reignited political tensions between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), prompting the latter to seek Central intervention.
The violence reportedly erupted during a clash between BJP and TMC supporters, leaving several people injured and properties damaged. Eyewitnesses reported widespread vandalism, arson, and intimidation, creating panic among locals. The unrest is believed to be politically motivated, rooted in local power tussles and post-election tensions.

Police have launched a probe into the matter, detaining dozens from both political camps. “We have arrested 40 individuals so far in connection with the violence and are investigating the matter. Additional forces have been deployed to maintain peace,” said a senior police official.
In response, a BJP delegation led by senior state leaders submitted a memorandum to Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, demanding immediate deployment of Central paramilitary forces in Maheshtala and other violence-hit areas. BJP leaders alleged that the state administration, under the TMC government, has failed to protect citizens and suppress political intimidation.
“Law and order in West Bengal have completely collapsed. Our party workers are being attacked, and the police are acting like agents of the ruling party. We urge the Central government to intervene and send paramilitary forces to restore peace and ensure democracy,” said BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar.
The TMC, however, denied the allegations and accused the BJP of inciting violence deliberately. “BJP is trying to disrupt peace in Bengal by provoking communal and political unrest. Our government is taking strong steps to handle the situation lawfully,” said TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh.
This is not the first time post-election violence has marred the political landscape in West Bengal. Similar incidents were reported following the 2021 Assembly elections, drawing criticism from human rights groups and opposition parties alike.
As tensions remain high, local residents have appealed for peace and security, fearing further outbreaks of violence. The state government has promised strict action against those responsible, while the Centre is reportedly reviewing the situation.
The incident underscores the growing friction in Bengal’s volatile political environment, with both major parties preparing for upcoming panchayat and civic polls in the state.
