The Nashik Crime Branch has detained Ashok Kharat, also known as “Captain” Kharat, a self-described numerologist and “godman,” on suspicion of raping a lady and taking advantage of several others under the pretense of religious rituals.

Police believe that Kharat used rituals, occult practices, and claims of divine abilities to earn the trust of a 35-year-old married woman in order to influence her. Between November 2022 and December 2025, he allegedly hypnotized her, drugged her with drugs mixed in food and water, and repeatedly sexually abused her. The survivor endured the abuse for nearly three years before approaching the police. According to officials, the accused also threatened to hurt the woman’s spouse and ruin her life if she spoke up or protested.

The complaint further claims that Kharat controlled the woman by taking advantage of her religious beliefs. Police found a pen drive with 58 pornographic film clips during a raid on Kharat’s “Oaks Property Dealer and Developer” office in Canada Corner. The video may show several victims, including some well-known people, according to investigators. The evidence has been sent for forensic analysis, and as the investigation progresses, more findings are anticipated.

Additionally, a CCTV footage from the office has surfaced that allegedly shows the accused performing dubious rites with a woman prior to having sex. Police are confirming the footage’s legitimacy and context. The president of the Shri Ishaneshwar Temple Trust at Mirgaon is Ashok Kharat, who lives in Sinnar taluka. A former member of the Merchant Navy, he became well-known as a numerologist and attracted celebrities, politicians, and businesspeople looking for advice.

After then-Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the Mirgaon shrine in November 2022, he became well-known. Photographs of Kharat with a number of well-known political figures and officials have emerged since his detention, giving the case a political undertone. Rupali Chakankar, the head of the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission, is one such official. A video of her allegedly washing Kharat’s feet at an event went viral on social media.

Although Chakankar admitted to knowing Kharat since 2019, she denied knowing about the alleged offenses. Sushma, leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT) Andhare has expressed concerns about Chakankar’s ongoing support and questioned his affiliation with Kharat. To investigate the matter and find further possible victims, the Maharashtra government established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by IPS officer Tejaswini Satpute.

In addition to provisions of the Maharashtra Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013 (Sections 3(1) and 3(2)), police have filed a case against Kharat under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 64(1), 74, 352, and 351(1).
