Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to visit New Delhi next week to attend the upcoming BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, amid continuing instability in West Asia and Tehran’s growing efforts to strengthen the role of the BRICS bloc in global affairs.
The meeting, scheduled for May 14 and 15, will bring together top diplomats from BRICS member nations at a time when geopolitical tensions in the Middle East remain high. Araghchi’s proposed visit is being seen as diplomatically significant as Iran attempts to deepen engagement with emerging economies while facing pressure from Western countries.
According to reports, Tehran increasingly views BRICS as an important political and economic platform capable of counterbalancing Western influence in international affairs. Iranian officials are believed to be pushing for greater coordination within the bloc on issues related to regional security, trade and global governance.
The visit comes amid ongoing diplomatic engagement between India and Iran over developments in West Asia. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently held discussions with Araghchi regarding the evolving regional situation, with both sides agreeing to remain in close contact over matters concerning security and stability.
The regional crisis has raised concerns globally due to tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. The uncertainty has affected energy markets and increased concerns for major oil-importing countries such as India, which depends heavily on crude supplies from the Gulf region.
Analysts believe Iran is attempting to strengthen ties with non-Western nations through platforms like BRICS to reduce diplomatic isolation and economic pressure imposed by the United States and its allies. Since joining the expanded BRICS grouping, Iran has consistently advocated for stronger cooperation among member countries on economic and geopolitical issues. The upcoming meeting in New Delhi is expected to include discussions on regional conflicts, energy security, economic cooperation and reforms of global institutions.
