According to a home department report presented to the Assembly on Monday, 74 persons were detained in Tripura for cybercrimes during the previous three years. Nine of the 123 cybercrime cases that were filed throughout these three years were filed by police on their own initiative.
On November 12, 2018, the criminal branch established the cybercrime unit. With permission from the director-general of police, significant cybercrime cases filed at various police stations around the state are sent to the cybercrime section. Between 2023 and January 2025, police stations around the state received 9,308 complaints; 8,485 of those complaints were investigated.
Together with the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, the cybercrime section offers support for recovering fraudulent funds, registering complaints about cybercrime, removing offensive content from social media, and unfreezing frozen bank accounts. According to the report, 113 police officers at various levels and 151 trained officers have been assigned to deal with cybercrime cases.
Numerous initiatives are being organized to increase public awareness of cybercrimes, especially through social media. Four months ago, DGP Amitabha Ranjan said that the state will receive its first police station dedicated to cybercrime.
