83-year-old Bengaluru man takes up civic body’s duties and sweeps streets to maintain his neighbourhood clean.

In the center of Bengaluru’s HSR Layout, 83-year-old Surya Narayan has emerged as an unexpected hero, filling the gap left by the BBMP. For many years, Narayan and his spouse have resided in the area, but recently, as the inconsistent waste management services have struggled to maintain cleanliness in the streets, Narayan decided to assume the duties of the BBMP. Rather than wait for the officials to intervene, he took it upon himself to sweep the streets and remove litter, ensuring his community stayed neat and maintained.

 Narayan was observed diligently cleaning the road and clearing blocked drains, activities he now performs several times daily, as reported by Bangalore Mirror. When questioned about his reasons, Narayan explained to the publication, “BBMP workers barely come to clean this area. As it rains, it becomes essential to tidy up more frequently.

Although many would anticipate a man of his age to relax, Narayan’s dedication to his community extends beyond mere tasks. He diligently gathers the leaves from the road and utilizes them to create compost for his little garden.

 His eco-friendly method of gardening reflects his principles. The footage of Narayan tidying up his street has triggered intense responses from the residents of Bengaluru. Numerous individuals, including a user who has known Narayan for many years, conveyed their respect for his commitment, recounting how the older gentleman welcomes them with a smile during their morning jogs. Nevertheless, there is also considerable anger regarding BBMP’s oversight.

A user expressed disappointment, saying, “This is not something to take pride in.” “It’s not the responsibility of this elderly man to tidy up the streets,” while another emphasized the government’s shortcomings despite obtaining substantial taxes from the city’s working citizens.
