Citizenship Resolution and Developmental Strides: BJP’s Vision for Barak Valley

Parimal Suklabaidya, BJP’s Silchar (SC) candidate and Assam minister, highlighted the significance of citizenship as a pressing issue in the Lok Sabha constituencies of Barak Valley, emphasizing the potential of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) to address it comprehensively. Suklabaidya underscored the proactive measures taken by the BJP government to alleviate the citizenship concerns of those who migrated from Bangladesh to the valley, particularly the Hindu Bengali population, which constitutes a significant demographic along the 129-km border with Bangladesh.
The Citizenship Amendment Act, enacted by Parliament, aims to provide relief to individuals displaced from neighboring countries due to religious persecution. However, Suklabaidya acknowledged the challenges posed by the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which hindered the implementation of the CAA rules. He reassured that once the MCC is lifted, the process will be expedited, and concerns regarding online application procedures and document submission will be addressed.
Asserting that the citizenship issue stemmed from the partition and remained unresolved for seven decades, Suklabaidya criticized previous governments for their inaction. He affirmed the BJP’s commitment to simplifying the CAA implementation process and resolving any bottlenecks within the next six to eight months, with the support of the state government.
Addressing opposition allegations regarding document submission requirements, Suklabaidya affirmed the government’s resolve to facilitate the application process and ensure transparency and efficiency in implementation.
In addition to citizenship, communication and connectivity emerged as key concerns in Barak Valley. Suklabaidya highlighted the BJP government’s efforts to address these issues, including the revitalization of the East-West Corridor initiated by former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the establishment of a ‘mini secretariat’ slated for completion before the 2026 assembly elections.
The BJP’s developmental agenda for Barak Valley extends to leveraging waterways, developing air connectivity, and establishing a ‘green airport’. Suklabaidya cited the reopening of the Cachar Paper Mills and plans for industrial development to generate employment opportunities for local youths as significant achievements under the BJP’s tenure.
Emphasizing the government’s commitment to socioeconomic welfare, Suklabaidya highlighted initiatives such as job creation, wage enhancements in tea gardens, and overall improvement in the region’s economy. He attributed these accomplishments to the BJP’s governance at both the central and state levels, asserting that the party has effectively addressed the longstanding issues faced by the people of Barak Valley.
