News Mania Desk / Agnibeena Ghosh/22nd May 2024

Tragedy struck in Pune as a speeding Porsche, driven by a 17-year-old, collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The CCTV footage of the incident revealed the car traveling well above the posted speed limits, with reports indicating speeds of up to 200 km per hour. The victims, identified as IT professionals Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, were hit with such force that Ashwini was thrown 20 feet into the air, while Aneesh was flung into a parked car.

Passersby rushed to the scene of the accident, and several videos captured the aftermath, including locals confronting and assaulting the occupants of the car. The incident occurred in the early hours of May 19th in the Kalyani Nagar area. The minor driver was detained following the accident but was granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Board within a record 15 hours. As part of his bail conditions, he was instructed to write a 300-word essay on road accidents and undergo various forms of counseling and rehabilitation.

The swift granting of bail in a case involving two fatalities has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for stricter punishment. Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar revealed that they had sought permission from the board to try the minor as an adult, but the request was denied. Despite awaiting the results of the driver’s blood report, preliminary investigations suggest that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

In response to the tragedy, legal action has been taken not only against the minor driver but also against his father, a prominent builder, under relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice Act. Additionally, proprietors of the bar establishment where the minor was reportedly drinking have been implicated for serving alcohol to an underage person. The legal drinking age in Maharashtra is 25.

The families of the victims are reeling from the sudden loss of their loved ones and are demanding justice. AneeshAwadhiya’s family expressed outrage at the bail granted to the accused, insisting that it should be revoked. Similarly, AshwiniKoshta’s family, devastated by her untimely death, has vowed to pursue the matter relentlessly. Both families have condemned the incident as an act of murder rather than a mere accident, given the circumstances surrounding the collision.

As the community mourns the loss of two promising young lives, the case has reignited conversations about road safety, underage drinking, and the need for stricter enforcement of laws. With emotions running high and demands for accountability mounting, all eyes are on the judicial system to ensure that justice is served for the victims and their families.
