Donald Trump’s children have long been his staunchest supporters, but at the 2024 Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, it was his granddaughter who took the spotlight. On Wednesday night, during the third day of the RNC, 17-year-old Kai Madison Trump delivered a heartfelt speech, giving the nation a glimpse into a more personal side of the former president.

Kai, the eldest daughter of Donald Trump Jr. and Vanessa Trump, shared touching anecdotes about her grandfather, portraying him as a doting family man. “To me, he’s just a normal grandpa,” she said, recounting moments where he would sneak her candy and soda and proudly share her academic achievements with friends. Her speech, which lasted three and a half minutes, was filled with affection and admiration. She ended with a declaration of love and respect for her grandfather, to the cheers of the audience, and echoed his famous slogan, “He truly wants the best for this country and he will fight every single day to make America great again.”

This event marked Kai’s first major political appearance. Her father, Donald Trump Jr., revealed that Kai had approached him with the desire to speak at the convention. Her participation highlighted a growing interest in political advocacy within the younger generation of the Trump family.

Kai’s mother, Vanessa Trump, a former model, watched proudly from the audience alongside her other children. Vanessa and Donald Trump Jr. divorced in 2018 after 13 years of marriage, but they continue to co-parent their five children, including Kai. Kai, named after her maternal great-grandfather, generally keeps a low profile on social media, focusing more on her passion for golf than politics. However, her political engagement has been visible at key moments, such as her attendance at a Turning Point USA event with her grandfather and father in Detroit last June.

Kai’s passion for golf, a shared interest with her grandfather, also made its way into her speech. She described their frequent games and the playful competitive spirit they share, with Donald Trump trying to get into her head during matches. “He’s always surprised that I don’t let him get to me,” Kai joked, adding, “But I have to remind him I’m a Trump, too.” This comment elicited a smile from Trump, who was present for the third straight night at the RNC.

In addition to her personal anecdotes, Kai touched upon the recent legal challenges faced by her grandfather, who has been embroiled in several court cases over the past year. She noted his resilience, stating that even amidst these trials, he continues to support and encourage her to strive for success. Trump, who was convicted on 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records and faces charges in other states, has remained a prominent figure in the political landscape despite these setbacks. His recent victory came when the classified documents case against him was dismissed.

Kai also addressed the recent attempted assassination of Donald Trump, an incident that shocked and saddened her. She expressed her heartbreak over the event and lauded her grandfather’s strength and perseverance despite the adversity he faces. “A lot of people put my grandpa through hell and he’s still standing,” she said, resonating with many in the audience.

As the night progressed, Donald Trump Jr. took the stage after Kai, followed by speeches from other prominent Republicans, including his fiancée Kimberly Guilfoyle. The event underscored the continued influence of the Trump family in the Republican Party and highlighted the next generation’s emerging role in political advocacy.
