Nvidia to work on AI in India

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 25th October 2024

As it strengthens alliances to take advantage of a developing market, Nvidia announced on Thursday that it will provide artificial intelligence processors to Indian businesses including Reliance Industries, owned by Mukesh Ambani. Chief Executive Jensen Huang and Ambani announced at an AI event in Mumbai, the business capital, that the U.S. company will provide its Blackwell AI processors for a one-gigawatt data center Reliance is constructing in the western state of Gujarat.

Nvidia said it also plans to supply tens of thousands of its Hopper AI chips to build large-scale data centres, in an expansion led by firms such as data centre provider Yotta Data Services and Tata Communications , opens new tab.

“In the future, India is going to be the country that will export AI,” Huang said, by contrast with its role in software exports. “You have the fundamental ingredients – AI, data and AI infrastructure, and you have a large population of users.”

Along with Tech Mahindra, Nvidia is training over half a million engineers to create and implement AI agents using its software by collaborating with IT behemoths like Infosys, TCS, and Wipro. Nvidia’s “Omniverse” simulation technology will be used by Reliance and Ola Electric, among other companies, to test plant layouts in a virtual environment.

The Hindi-language AI model, which was unveiled on Thursday, expands on Huang’s belief that, in order to guarantee inclusivity, each nation must develop AI utilizing its own labor, data, and infrastructure. Since its founding almost twenty years ago, Nvidia has established engineering and design facilities in India in addition to offices in important locations like Hyderabad, which is nearby, and Bengaluru, a tech hotspot. Reliance and Nvidia made a commitment in September of last year to create AI supercomputers and huge language models that are trained on Indian languages. Nvidia and the Tata Group announced a similar collaboration later that year.

However, there have been challenges associated with India’s AI aspirations, including the government’s $1.25 billion investment to support projects, firms, and the creation of LLMs. Because setting up fabs, or fabrication facilities, entails a significant financial investment and requires specialized personnel, its chipmaking sector is still in its infancy. The first chip has not yet been produced in India. Analysts see a long road ahead, even though international chip companies are investing and establishing facilities in India as it competes with key hubs like Taiwan to grow its semiconductor sector.

“Today, India as part of Nvidia’s revenue is small,” Huang stated. “But our hopes are large.”
