OpenAI Brings GPT-5.6 Terra and Luna to India With Local AI Processing

OpenAI has expanded access to its GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-5.6 Luna models in India through Amazon Web Services’ Amazon Bedrock, allowing businesses to use the AI systems while keeping model inference within the country. The move is expected to be particularly significant for organisations that handle sensitive information and operate under strict data-residency requirements.
Under the new arrangement, requests made through the India-specific Amazon Bedrock infrastructure are processed on AWS infrastructure located within India. AWS said the India Geo cross-Region inference system can route requests between its Mumbai and Hyderabad regions while ensuring that processing remains within the Indian geography.
The availability could benefit sectors such as banking, healthcare, government and other industries that need stronger control over how sensitive business and customer information is processed. Organisations can use the models while continuing to rely on the security, governance and operational controls already available through their AWS environment.
The two GPT-5.6 models are aimed at different business requirements. Terra is positioned as a balanced model for general-purpose production workloads, including software development, information analysis and document-related tasks. Luna, meanwhile, is designed for speed and cost efficiency, making it suitable for high-volume applications where businesses need to handle large numbers of requests quickly.
Cost is another major part of the development. AWS said GPT-5.6 Luna is now available at prices up to 80% lower following OpenAI’s pricing changes, while Terra has received a reduction of up to 20%. The lower pricing is aimed at making advanced AI capabilities more accessible for businesses running applications at scale.
The India launch also gives companies an option to deploy OpenAI models through infrastructure they may already use for cloud computing and enterprise applications. This could reduce concerns around transferring AI workloads outside the country and make adoption easier for organisations facing regulatory or internal data-handling requirements.
GPT-5.6 Terra and Luna had previously become generally available through Amazon Bedrock in other AWS regions. Their India availability extends that access to organisations seeking local processing and greater control over their AI deployments.
