Veteran actor Sowcar Janaki, one of the most respected and versatile faces of South Indian cinema, died in Chennai on Friday at the age of 94. She had been undergoing treatment for age-related health complications at a private hospital. Her death marks the end of an extraordinary career that stretched across more than seven decades. Janaki made her acting debut in 1950 with the Telugu film Shavukaru, which earned her the screen name by which she became widely known. She entered Tamil cinema with Valayapathi in 1952 and subsequently established herself as a leading performer across multiple South Indian film industries.
Over the course of her career, she appeared in nearly 400 films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. She worked alongside several of the biggest stars of different generations and successfully adapted to changing cinematic styles. Her performances ranged from emotionally demanding dramatic roles to family characters, sophisticated women and comic parts.
Her association with filmmaker K Balachander became particularly significant. Although she was already an established star, Balachander’s films highlighted dimensions of her acting that went beyond the image of a conventional dramatic heroine. Her ability to portray complex and varied characters helped reinforce her reputation as a performer of considerable range.
Janaki was also active outside films. She performed extensively on stage and appeared in television productions, demonstrating her versatility across different forms of entertainment. Even as she reduced her screen appearances in later years, her standing in Indian cinema remained strong. Her final film appearance came in the 2023 Telugu movie Anni Manchi Sakunamule. By then, she had already become an important link between several generations of Indian cinema.
Her contribution to the arts was recognised with several honours. She received the Kalaimamani award from the Tamil Nadu government and multiple Nandi awards. In 2022, the Government of India conferred the Padma Shri on her for her contribution to Indian cinema. News of her death prompted tributes from across the film industry. Actors and colleagues remembered her as a gifted performer whose elegance, discipline and versatility helped define important periods of South Indian cinema.
