In Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), a terror attack in the Sunday market injured at least nine people. Initial reports state that nine people were injured when terrorists threw a grenade close to the packed Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) in Srinagar’s Sunday market. The Sunday Market is a weekly market located in the center of Srinagar city, on Lal Chowk, next to TRC.

Terrorists threw grenades outside the TRC playground, which was overcrowded because of the market, according to Greater Kashmir, the local media. The Sunday market terror incident in Srinagar has not resulted in any reported fatalities.

Police and paramilitary personnel had gathered in the vicinity following the grenade attack in Sunday Market, according to the footage. Police are attempting to remove the injured, according to officials. To find the terrorists, a search has been initiated.

The grenade explosion caused panic in the area and sent shoppers scrambling for cover. All the injured persons – eight men and one woman – have been admitted to SMHS Hospital. “All the injured have been rushed to the SMHS hospital for treatment,” an official was quoted as saying. All are said to be in a stable condition.

Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah termed the attack on shoppers “deeply disturbing”. He said, “The last few days have been dominated by headlines of attacks & encounters in parts of the valley. Today’s news of a grenade attack on innocent shoppers at the ‘Sunday market’ in Srinagar is deeply disturbing.”

“There can be no justification for targeting innocent civilians. The security apparatus must do everything possible to end this spurt of attacks at the earliest so that people can go about their lives without any fear,” Omar Abdullah said.

The assault close to the tightly guarded TRC occurs one day after security forces in downtown Srinagar’s Khanyar neighborhood killed a senior Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander.

According to a senior police officer, Usman, the LeT commander, was engaged in the murder of Inspector Masroor Wani and had been active in the Valley for a number of years. In October of last year, Masroor Wani was playing cricket at the Eidgah pitch in Srinagar when he was shot dead at close range.
