Appointments for immigrant visas are halted for candidates globally by the Trump administration.

During the ongoing immigration crackdown by the U.S. government during the Republican leader’s second term in office, President Donald Trump’s administration has halted the appointment of immigrant visas for applicants from all over the world.
A spokesman for the U.S. State Department announced on Tuesday that it has started a global training program at all U.S. embassies and consulates across the world, and that visa service appointments would be modified to make room for the training.

Trump has undertaken an aggressive deportation campaign and immigration enforcement, which has resulted in the revocation of green cards and visas as well as the denial of applications for a variety of reasons, including political beliefs and pro-Palestinian demonstrations against the attack on Gaza by U.S. ally Israel.
He claims that enhancing domestic security is the goal of the crackdown.
There have been some legal obstacles to the crackdown. A Trump administration policy that suspended the issue of immigration visas to applicants from 75 countries was overturned by a U.S. judge on Friday, who claimed that the policy went beyond Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s legislative power.

The State Department stated that the training was intended to assist consular personnel in screening out candidates thought likely to become dependent on U.S. public services and to assure review of visa applicants “comprehensively and consistently.” However, it did not provide specifics regarding the training or its schedule.

Immigrant visa applicants having scheduled interviews at U.S. embassies and consulates reportedly received emails informing them that their appointments were being rescheduled and that they would receive future notice of a new date, according to an earlier story about the delay on visa appointments. Human rights organizations have extensively denounced Trump’s immigration crackdown as discriminatory and a breach of due process and free speech rights.

Additionally, rights organizations claim that the crackdown has made America a dangerous place, particularly for ethnic minorities who have expressed worries about racial profiling. Although Trump ran on a platform of preventing illegal immigration in 2024, his government has also made legal immigration more challenging, such as by charging applicants for specific work visas new, high costs.
