Kareena Kapoor takes a dig at Prada over Kolhapuri Chappal stir: ‘Sorry not Prada…’

Actor Kareena Kapoor has humorously weighed in on the Prada-Kolhapuri chappal debate, stating she prefers her original leather sandals over the luxury brand’s alternative. On Sunday, Kareena used Instagram Stories to comment on the ongoing issue. She shared a photo from her holiday, depicting her feet resting on a sun lounger, adorned with a pair of classic Kolhapuri chappals that have a metallic silver sheen. Through this image, she aimed to promote the artisans linked to the traditional craft in India. Kareena included a clever caption with the image that stated  “Sorry not Prada…(laughing and punching emoji) but my OG kolapuri (Heart emoji)️.”

With this, she took a dig at luxury brand Prada, proudly flaunting her original Kolhapuri sandals instead of opting for high-end designer footwear.

The Kolhapuri chappal gained international recognition when the Italian fashion brand Prada showcased its version of the chappals in Prada’s Men’s Spring Summer 2025 collection, causing a buzz. Numerous individuals stepped up to criticize the brand for not recognizing the traditional craft involved in producing Kolhapuri Chappals or the artisans who practice it. Subsequently, the brand acknowledged that the slippers showcased on the runway were “inspired” by Kolhapuri Chappals, stating their intention to engage in discussions with representatives of trade and industry involved in the 800-year-old craft of creating the slippers.

On July 11, Prada will conduct a video conference meeting with officials from the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (MACCIA) along with artisans. The luxury label, facing allegations of “cultural appropriation,” is anticipated to engage in talks regarding a potential partnership with Kolhapuri artisans, aiming to investigate options for introducing the Kolhapuri Chappal to an international audience. In the meantime, Kareena is relishing a holiday with her family in London. A video recently surfaced on social media featuring the actor walking through the city’s streets and savoring the dining scene with her husband Saif Ali Khan and their sons Taimur and Jeh.
