His tenure stirred repeated clashes, but also defined a unique assertiveness in Indian politics

Jagdeep Dhankhar, the current Vice President of India and former Governor of West Bengal, has often been labelled as an “opposition magnet.” This title didn’t emerge from a vacuum—it stems from his frequent and high-profile confrontations with opposition-led governments, particularly during his tenure in West Bengal. However, the interpretation of this role remains a matter of perspective: was Dhankhar simply confrontational, or was he fulfilling his constitutional duties with an uncompromising stance?

Born in Rajasthan and trained as a lawyer, Dhankhar rose through the ranks in Indian politics, serving briefly as a Union Minister in 1990 under the Chandra Shekhar government. He later aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), gaining prominence for his legal acumen and bold views.

His tenure as Governor of West Bengal from July 2019 to July 2022 was marked by continuous tussles with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Dhankhar repeatedly questioned the state government’s policies, law-and-order issues, and handling of administrative matters. He actively used social media and public platforms to voice his concerns, which often drew ire from the opposition, who accused him of exceeding his constitutional mandate.

Supporters, however, argue that Dhankhar was simply upholding the federal structure and ensuring accountability. They view his interventions as a necessary counterbalance in states where opposition parties held power. His assertiveness was seen by many in the BJP and its allies as a sign of strong leadership and constitutional guardianship.

Upon becoming Vice President in August 2022, Dhankhar brought the same assertiveness to the Rajya Sabha. He has been critical of disruptions in Parliament and has emphasised the supremacy of the legislature over judicial activism, sometimes sparking debates on the separation of powers.

In essence, Jagdeep Dhankhar’s political persona cannot be viewed in black and white. To his critics, he was an agent of confrontation; to his supporters, a constitutional watchdog. His tenure underscores the evolving nature of Indian federalism, where the role of governors and vice presidents can significantly influence the national discourse.

Whether seen as an “opposition magnet” or a “constitutionalist in action,” Dhankhar has undoubtedly left a lasting imprint on Indian polity, challenging conventions and prompting important questions about the balance of power.
