PCOS on the Rise Among Young Indian Women, Doctors Warn

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 15th September 2025

Gynecologists are sounding the alarm over the growing number of young Indian women being diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal condition affecting fertility, metabolism, and overall health. Experts link the surge to lifestyle changes, including unhealthy diets, sedentary routines, and weight gain.

Dr. Irfana Shahul Hameed, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Plush, explains that irregular eating habits, processed foods, and lack of exercise are disturbing hormonal balance, leaving young women more vulnerable. “These lifestyle factors, combined with stress and poor sleep patterns, are triggering hormonal imbalances that can set the stage for PCOS,” she notes.

The condition often goes unnoticed in its early stages, but doctors urge women to look out for key warning signs. These include irregular or missed periods, unusually heavy bleeding, spotting before menstruation, persistent acne, hair thinning or excessive hair fall, and difficulty losing weight despite effort. Other indicators include fatigue, mood fluctuations, and changes in libido.

Experts stress the importance of menstrual and cycle tracking as a powerful tool for early detection and management. Beyond simply recording periods, modern tracking methods encourage women to monitor ovulation, progesterone levels in the second half of the cycle, sleep quality, and even heart-rate variability. Such data helps identify irregularities sooner and supports better medical consultations.

Dr. Hameed emphasizes that timely recognition of symptoms, paired with proactive lifestyle modifications, can significantly improve outcomes. A balanced diet, regular physical activity, and mindful self-monitoring remain the most effective strategies in managing PCOS and reducing long-term complications such as diabetes and cardiovascular issues.

With cases on the rise, healthcare professionals stress awareness, early detection, and healthy living as the best defenses against the growing PCOS epidemic in India.
