The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has confirmed that the first flyover of the ₹14,000-crore Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project will be completed and operational by May 2026, marking a key milestone in one of Mumbai’s largest infrastructure undertakings.

The six-lane, 1.2-km-long flyover will begin at Dindoshi court in Goregaon and extend to the entrance of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). It will serve as the western access point to the planned twin tunnels that will eventually connect directly to Mulund in the east.

Construction progress has been significant, with 27 out of 31 pillars already completed. Officials said the westbound arm of the flyover is expected to be ready by January 2026, while the eastbound arm should be finished by April 2026, ahead of the May deadline. Work on associated infrastructure, including walkways, deck slabs, and an elevated rotary junction, is also underway.

The GMLR project, spanning 12.2 km, aims to drastically reduce east-west travel time in Mumbai. Currently, commuters take nearly 90 minutes during peak hours to cover the Goregaon-Mulund route. With the project in place, officials estimate that the journey could be cut down to just 25 minutes.

While the flyover is scheduled for early completion, the twin tunnel segment under SGNP is projected to be completed by 2028, with the entire project fully operational by 2029.

Civic authorities have said the GMLR will not only ease congestion on existing arterial roads but also provide a faster, uninterrupted link between Mumbai’s western and eastern suburbs, boosting overall connectivity and reducing fuel consumption.

The project is regarded as a critical step in tackling Mumbai’s mounting traffic woes and modernizing its urban transport infrastructure.
