With fatty liver disease—a condition often linked to poor lifestyle habits and diet—becoming increasingly prevalent, a leading gastroenterologist has highlighted specific dietary changes that can help reverse the condition, reduce fat accumulation, and calm inflammation.
Dr. Shankar Zanwar, Senior Consultant, Gastroenterologist at Gleneagles Hospital, stresses that while excess fat in the liver can lead to severe issues like fibrosis and cirrhosis, the right food choices can be a powerful tool in supporting liver cleansing and healing. He recommends incorporating the following seven foods into a daily diet:

- Green Leafy Vegetables: Greens such as spinach, kale, and lettuce are rich in fiber and antioxidants, which are essential for detoxification and protecting the liver from harmful compounds.

- Fresh Fruits: Fruits like apples, berries, papaya, and oranges are liver-friendly. Grapefruit, in particular, contains antioxidants like naringenin and naringin, which studies show can reduce the development of hepatic fibrosis by lowering inflammation and tissue buildup.

- Whole Grains: High-fiber grains like brown rice, oats, quinoa, and millets aid in managing blood sugar and metabolism, helping to reduce liver fat accumulation over time.

- Healthy Fats: Anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids found in nuts, seeds, avocados, and olive oil support the liver’s healing process. Replacing fried snacks with these healthier options is recommended.

- Garlic and Ginger: Both spices are known to improve digestion and possess properties that help reduce fat accumulation within the liver. They can be easily integrated into daily meals or consumed in warm water.

- Green Tea: This beverage is rich in catechins, which have been shown in reviews to help lower liver fat and enzyme levels in individuals with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). Dr. Zanwar advises consuming 1–2 cups daily.

- Hydration: Maintaining optimal hydration by drinking 12–15 glasses of water daily is crucial for flushing toxins and supporting overall liver function. Coconut water is also recommended for its electrolyte-balancing benefits.
The gastroenterologist emphasizes that managing and reversing fatty liver requires consistency, focusing on a balanced, nutrient-rich diet, and avoiding extreme crash or Fad diets.
